PADI Deep Diver Speciality Course
Course Overview
The purpose of the PADI Deep Diver speciality course is to familiarise divers with the skills, knowledge, planning, organization, procedures, techniques, problems, hazards and enjoyment of diving between depths of 18 metres and 40 metres. The Deep Diver speciality course is intended to serve as a safe, supervised introduction to deeper diving within the limits of recreational scuba diving.
The goals are to develop the student diver's knowledge of deep diving.
And to enable the student divers to plan, organise and make no decompression dives between the depths of 18 metres and 40 metres.
Prerequisites
- This course is only open to Advanced Open Water Divers or higher.
- The minimum age requirement if 15
What will I need to participate
In addition to normal Scuba Equipment which must include exposure protection appropriate to the dive conditions, the following items are required by each student:
- Compass
- Reel and SMB
- RDP or Wheel
- Knife capable of cutting line
- Whistle
- Logbook
- Underwater light
Each student will have been expected to:
Have completed all the appropriate knowledge reviews salient to the course Read the PADI Deep Diving Manual - copies may be bought from the Treasurer
Watched either the PADI Deep Diver video or the professional version - copies may be bought from the Treasurer.
NB: a failure to have undertaken this preparation will result in our refusal to your diving. Planned Dives
The PADI Deep Diver Speciality Course consists of four supervised deep dives.
- Dive 1 is likely to be planned to be 24m
- Dive 2 is likely to be planned between 18 and 20m
- Dive 3 will be a 30 - 40m dive
- Dive 4 will be between 25 - 30m.
No dive during the course will be conducted below 40 metres.
How long will the course take?
Student divers will have to commit to a Monday night theory session.
The Open Water Dives will be completed over two full days. What do the dives involve?
What is involved is best described by the learning objectives for each dive.
After Deep Open Water Training Dive 1, you will have:
- executed a descent using a reference line as a tactile guide.
- compared the amount of time needed to complete a task on the surface and at depth
- made a comparison between the various depths being read by other divers pressure gauges
- used a depth gauge and a timing device to measure an ascent rate not exceeding 18 metres per minute
- performed an ascent using a reference line as a tactile guide
- observed a three minute safety stop.
After Deep Open Water Training Dive 2 you will have:
- executed a free descent using a reference line as a "visual" guide only
- described and recorded the changes that occur to three pressure sensitive items while at depth
- performed a navigation swim with a compass away from and back to the reference line
- make an ascent using that line for visual reference only
- As with the first Open Water dive specific attention will be paid to observing appropriate ascent rates and the making of safety stops.
After Open Water Training Dive 3 you will have:
- further practice of using deep reference lines
- made observations about how colour changes with depth
- observed the recommended ascent rates
- performed a simulated 8 minute emergency safety stop at 5 meters while breathing from an emergency air source for at least one minute.
Open Water Deep Dive 4 should look different from the preceding 3. It will feature a descent and ascent using the contour of a sloping bottom or possibly a wall as reference.
After each dive a comprehensive debriefing will be undertaken to consolidate learning.
